Order of the Pineapple 2013: Adam Gorightly and S. John Ross

The Disorder of the Pineapple

The envelop for The Order of the Pineapple, please. The pineapples go to:

Adam Gorightly and S. John Ross.

S. John Ross (Pope Leo). The mind behind Novus Ordo Discordia, the Gospel of St. Pesher the Gardener, author of Steve Jackson Games’ Warehouse 23, creator of Risus and fonts used by Discordians, and “foreplayer” (foreword writer) for Ek-sen-trik-kuh Discordia: The Tales of Shamlicht. Patriarch Wilhelm Leonardo Pesher-Principle was a major contributor to Apocrypha Discordia, likely the first (and often considered one of the best) Discordian work of the 21st century.

Adam Gorightly. Author of The Prankster and the Conspiracy: The Story of Kerry Thornley and How He Met Oswald and Inspired the Counterculture. This is considered the primary work covering Thornley and the early Discordians, and uncovered much that was unknown. The Shadow Over Santa Susana: Black Magic, Mind Control, and “The Manson Family” Mythos is one of the most complete compilations of Charles Manson and the Manson family. He is known as the “Crackpot Historian.”

The Order of the Pineapple (aka The DisOrder of the Pineapple) honors those who contribute to discord and ek-sen-trik tendencies above and beyond the call of duty. It was first given in 1982 and is given each year on January 18 which is Pat Pineapple Day. Last year’s winners were Doctor Demento and R. Crumb. To see a list of all winners, visit op.loveshade.org.

Congratulations to the new winners! Remember to eat something having to with pineapple on January 18!

Chasing Eris

Hey all. I’m just rocking up to share a project which I find exciting, and hopefully some of you might grok too.

The Principia was written around forty years ago. The Apocrypha Discordia, the first major work since the Principia, was released in 2001. Since then there’ve been numerous creative pieces released, with more major Discordian works released in the last ten years than the first forty combined. There’ve been Discordian music projects, artworks, magazines, T-shirts, badges. The religion is alive and kicking; but why?

What is it about a 50 year old joke religion that remains so pervasive and inspiring to its followers? What has attracted Discordians to Discordia? What does an ambiguously sincere religion offer to the irreligious, or sometimes aggressively atheistic? How does a philosophy overtly disregarding rules or structure capture the rigid attention of so many? How has Discordianism influenced one’s life choices, political or philosophical beliefs or lifestyle? What came before Discordia, and what did the road look like after?

I intend to visit Discordians to develop an understanding of the role Discordianism plays in one’s life through a series of interviews. I also intend to take an active role in viewing Discordians in ‘their natural habitat’, seeing how Discordia plays a role in everyday life, whether that’s taking some downtime to relax or roaming the streets in a fake moustache putting up silly posters as part of Operation Mindfuck, ultimately developing an engaging and intimate piece of gonzo anthropology.

I intend to come up with a piece of work that explores and develops an overview of Discordia, that ultimately represents a celebration of religion, humour, philosophy and life.

If you’re keen to keep up to date, offer yourself up as a human sacrifice volunteer for interviews, offer advice or just heckle from the sidelines, you can do so at the Facebook group here: http://www.facebook.com/ChasingEris. Or, just start chatting here.

The Brunswick Shrine

I’d like to share some words and photos from Reverend Narot and Darth Waader (who some of you may remember as DJs on Radio Free Discordia). They took a pilgrimage to the Brunswick Shrine a few years ago…

The Holy Sign, retained by the city of Whittier

In an intro written by Thornley, there’s a statement along the lines of “Somewhere around Santa Fe Springs, or Friendly Hills…” These are two areas in close proximity in Whittier – SF Springs is a few freeway exits before the glorious Friendly Hills neighborhood. I’ve wanted to go around Santa Fe Springs and find the other bowling alleys in the area – as far as I can tell in fact, the Brunswick shrine would indeed be AMF Friendly Hills Lanes (as it’s called these days). The reality is, young Thornley and Hill probably went to a couple bowling alleys in the area. Adam Gorightly has some more information.

Anecdotes that support this previous anecdote are from both my father (he’s a 50′s California kid, Vietnam veteran, drunkard and occasional Discordian) and the manager of Friendly Hills. In the photos I sent, you can see the creepy, demonic fireplace. That fireplace is located in a backroom at Friendly Hills lanes. According to the mgt, in the days of yesteryear, there was a steakhouse style room located there. There’d be cheap, all night steak dinners, feeding the drunken bowlers all hours of the night… which leads to my next anecdote. According to my dad, if you were 14-19 years old in the 50′s and 60′s, and you wanted to get drunk, apparently bowling alleys were the place to go in California. They often wouldn’t ID youngsters, there weren’t cops on patrol bothering kids, and “being a jolly good young white teenager having a beer” wasn’t a huge deal like it is these days. They were the late night escape to be a jackass, have a few beers, and according to the manager at Friendly Hills, fill your belly with a nice steak before you hit the road. I’m very doubtful they actually drank coffee at the bowling alleys. That’s presumably some teenage humor (I’d have said that myself!)

So that’s about that there: there’s still a few mysteries, and every time I’ve been there has been entirely bizarre.

Name the Coming Baby Girl!

As Olivia aka Ms. Candy Monkey becomes increasing and fecundly impatient to get the baby out (it’s due next month), it occurred to us maybe our lovechild should have a name.

For some reason Olivia has been somewhat hestitant to accept any of my wonderfully touching suggestions for the name for our coming baby girl.  You know, really special names gained directly from our random name generator.*  So far the Baby Mama hasn’t accepted any from my list of to-be-legally-recognized baby names such as Princess Pineapple, Godling Minnie Cheerleader, Sister Mary Discord, Pope Baby, and Empress Baby Poop.

So we decided to turn to others for name ideas.  Pope Hilde did the same thing, and es and Fundament’s baby touched Mommy’s breast to self-choose the wonderful Discordian-but-not-too-Discordian name Erisa (suggested by Princess Unicornia and Nurse Eggscream as announced in our July-August 2008 Snooze Letter).

Submit as many names as you like either by posting here or sending them to us by email at namethebaby@loveshade.org.  (The email addy will be discontinued after a name is chosen).  The winning name and winning name suggestor will be posted here and in our Snooze Letter.

Thanks for your suggestions and have a day!

*which we completely ripped off and tweaked from Professor Mu Chao’s.
