Order of the Pineapple 2013: Adam Gorightly and S. John Ross

The Disorder of the Pineapple

The envelop for The Order of the Pineapple, please. The pineapples go to:

Adam Gorightly and S. John Ross.

S. John Ross (Pope Leo). The mind behind Novus Ordo Discordia, the Gospel of St. Pesher the Gardener, author of Steve Jackson Games’ Warehouse 23, creator of Risus and fonts used by Discordians, and “foreplayer” (foreword writer) for Ek-sen-trik-kuh Discordia: The Tales of Shamlicht. Patriarch Wilhelm Leonardo Pesher-Principle was a major contributor to Apocrypha Discordia, likely the first (and often considered one of the best) Discordian work of the 21st century.

Adam Gorightly. Author of The Prankster and the Conspiracy: The Story of Kerry Thornley and How He Met Oswald and Inspired the Counterculture. This is considered the primary work covering Thornley and the early Discordians, and uncovered much that was unknown. The Shadow Over Santa Susana: Black Magic, Mind Control, and “The Manson Family” Mythos is one of the most complete compilations of Charles Manson and the Manson family. He is known as the “Crackpot Historian.”

The Order of the Pineapple (aka The DisOrder of the Pineapple) honors those who contribute to discord and ek-sen-trik tendencies above and beyond the call of duty. It was first given in 1982 and is given each year on January 18 which is Pat Pineapple Day. Last year’s winners were Doctor Demento and R. Crumb. To see a list of all winners, visit op.loveshade.org.

Congratulations to the new winners! Remember to eat something having to with pineapple on January 18!

Order of the Pineapple 2012: R. Crumb and Dr. Demento

Order of the Pineapple: Pat PineappleDR. DEMENTO and R. CRUMB named to Order of the Pineapple 2012

We had some very worthy nominees this year, but for the award’s 30th anniversary the outstanding winners are R. Crumb and Dr. Demento.

Dr. Demento: A radio announcer who specializes in novelty songs, comedy, and strange or unusual recordings dating from the early days of phonograph records to the present. The doctor has been spinning the wax for decades, has a master’s degree in folklore and ethnomusicology, and brought older comic musical artists such as Spike Jones, Benny Bell, Yogi Yorgesson, and Tom Lehrer to new generations. His show was the one that introduced the world to “Weird Al” Yankovich. Visit www.drdemento.com

R. Crumb (Robert Crumb). The creator of Mr. Natural, Fritz the Cat, Devil Girl, and Keep on Truckin’. One of the most prominent of the underground artists, his work is said to have laid the foundation for the underground going mainstream in such animated programs as Beavis and Butthead, The Simpsons, and South Park. While working well outside the mainstream, he also illustrated a graphic novel version of the Book of Genesis, several album covers, and has had his work featured in museums. Visit www.rcrumb.com

The Order of the Pineapple (sometimes called The DisOrder of the Pineapple) has been awarded on January 18 in most years since 1982; this is its 30th anniversary. It is typically awarded to one or two people who have made outstanding contributions to “the participatorial study of comedic attitudes and eccentric tendencies.” Last year’s honorees were Alan Moore (V for Vendetta, Watchmen, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Lost Girls) and Sondra London ( A Current Affair, The Making of a Serial Killer: The Real Story of the Gainesville Murders, Killer Fiction, Knockin’ on Joe: Voices from Death Row).

While anyone has the right to turn down the award, so far no one has.

Remember, it is absolutely essential for members to eat something containing or resembling pineapple on Pat Pineapple Day, January 18–unless of course they don’t feel like it.

Order of the Pineapple

ORDER OF THE PINEAPPLE

WINNERS

DisOrder of the Pineapple

The votes have been submitted and counted and we have the DisOrder of the Pineapple winners for 2011. In smagmoidal order, they are (insert trumpets here) Alan Moore and Sondra London.

Sondra London. E conducted what are perhaps the final and most in depth interviews with Discordianism co-founder Kerry Thornley aka Omar Khayyam Ravenhurst, many of which can still be found online. The author is known, rightly or wrongly, for being a “serial killer groupie,” having dated a boy in high school who later became one, and falling in love with another after the fact. E also was a friend of Thornley during es latter years, and wrote es obituary. Working originally with Rev. DrJon, London is listed as compiler and editor of the new Discordian tome Discordia Prophetica. “I have become my story….I am not safe,” said London . “I never wanted to be a repeatable person.”

Alan Moore. The author of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Watchmen, V for Vendetta and other works also wrote Lost Girls. This features three Discordian saints (Alice of Wonderland, Dorothy of Oz, and Wendy of Neverland, who may have been based on Emperor Norton’s ‘The Little Countess’ Minnie Rae) which pushed the edge from art to pornography. In fact, it has been called the first true porno-graphic novel. E refused money for movies made from es books, and left well-paying positions in corporate comics to start what is perhaps the 21st century’s first true underground magazine Dodgem Logic. The comic icon was also a friend of original Discordian and OP member Robert Anton Wilson.

The Order or DisOrder was begun in 1982 by the Ek-sen-triks CluborGuild, and is always presented on 18 January which is Pat Pineapple Day. It honors those who give extraordinary service to “eccentric discord.” While a direct or indirect contribution to D & D of the ECG or the ECG is technically required, nowadays we’re pretty loose with that part. But exceptional service to the cause of discord and eccentric tendencies is still a must.

And remember to consume something made of or resembling pineapple on January 18. While anyone’s welcome to do so, that’s an absolute and essential requirement of OP members. Unless of course they don’t feel like it.

The Golden Pineapple

By now everyone’s heard of the Order of the Pineapple. What, you haven’t? Well, you’re about to be enlightened.

The Order of the Pineapple (OP) is our second oldest and most truly “this-gives-you-bragging-rights” DisOrder. Like most of our stuff, we didn’t create it but ripped it off. It began recognizing exceptional contributions of discord and eccentricity in service to the Ek-sen-triks CluborGuild in the very early 1980s, but expanded. A connection with the original group or to the Discordian Division of the Ek-sen-triks CluborGuild rip off is considered, but not required. But exceptional service to the cause of discord and eccentric tendencies is a must.

Last year’s honorees were Professor Mu-Chao (who built this site) and Professor Cramulus (who revived this site).  Recent honorees have included Steve Jackson (SJ Games is publisher of the black cover edition of Principia Discordia) and, ahem, Reverend Loveshade.  Previous honorees included Malaclypse the Younger, Omar Khayyam Ravenhurst, Timothy Leary, and Robert Anton Wilson. Anyone is free to turn down the award, but so far no one has. We’re rather surprised at that.

The award is given out each year on Pat Pineapple Day, which is January 18. So it’s time to think of nominating worthies for next year’s award. While only a member of the DisOrder can technically make a nomination, we’ll take suggestions for deserving trouble-makers from anyone. Send your suggestions including reasons why we should consider your proposed member to op2011@loveshade.org. This is a temporary email address and will be discontinued after the 2011 winners are announced on 18 January 2011. Please send nominations and suggestions for nominations no later than Santa Claus Day (25 December 2010).

To learn more and to see all known honorees, go to discordia.loveshade.org/xtra/pineapple.html or the officious site at orderofthepineapple.info .

OP Estorical notes

We are missing several years in which the OP may have been given. If you have any information on awardees from 1995 to 2006, please email us at the address listed at the sites listed above or post a comment below.

Order of the Pineapple Winners 2010

I didn’t write this I’m just posting it. But I am a member of the order!

The Order of the Pineapple is also called the DisOrder of the Pineapple and the Pineapple DisOrder, but it’s usually abbreviated O.P. (The award has also been called Patus Pineappleus Bromeliadic and the winners The P.P. Bromeliadics or Bromedliaddicts). It honors those who have given extraordinary service to “the participatorial study of comedic attitudes and eccentric tendencies.” Most awardees have been members of one of the chapters of the Ek-sen-triks CluborGuild (ECG), the Discordian Division of the Ek-sen-triks CluborGuild (D & D of the ECG), Colonial Williamsburg, or Discordians, but that is not required. The O.P. is awarded to very few people, those who are especially servicey. It’s presented on only one day a year, January 18 CE, which is 18 Chaos of the Discordian calendar. That date is recognized as Pat Pineapple Day. Pat is the Mascot of the ECG and Patron Saint of the D & D of the ECG.

Without further ado, here are the 2010 winners which makes this the Year of the Professors:

Professor Mu-Chao: formerly known as Prince Mu-Chao, is responsible for creating the 23 Apples of Eris which appears at http://www.23ae.com. One of the most popular Discordian sites, it slowly faded until a recent revival and a redo brought it back to full strength. E has contributed to many Discordian works; you can see some of Mu-Chao’s work at http://www.23ae.com/author/pmc. We would like especially to point out The Jake that Changed a World, where an effort begun by Mu-Chao led to Planet X being named Planet Eris, at http://discordia.loveshade.org/ek-sen-trik-kuh/planeteris.html. Also see es bio at http://s23.org/wiki/Professor_Mu-Chao. While not a member of the D & D of the ECG or the Ek-sen-triks CluborGuild, e helped spread the word and has done work specifically for the D & D of the ECG.

Professor Cramulus: formerly known as Pirate Dan, is largely responsible for OMGASM or Operation Mindfuck: Golden Apple Seed Missions, PosterGASM, and for being the first editor of the Discordian magazine Intermittens. E moderates the Black Iron Prison wiki at http://www.blackironprison.com, edited the second edition book of the BIP found at http://www.principiadiscordia.com/bip/1.php, and has contributed to several Discordian works. If its a 21 century Discordian Jake, chances are e’s involved. You can see es bio at http://s23.org/wiki/Professor_Cramulus. While not a member of the Ek-sen-triks CluborGuild or the D & D of the ECG, e helped spread the word and has been a voice for reason in Discordian fire fests that threatened to really split us apart where we aren’t sticking together.

Congratulations!
